WHEN YOU NEED TO HIRE AN ATTORNEY PART I INITIAL INTERVIEW

We may not like it, but there are instances in our lives when we need an attorney. Common situations are preparing or probating a will, divorce, personal injury, or criminal charges. If you own a business, it’s best to keep an attorney on retainer for the many issues faced in running a business. When you contact an attorney, what is the most important thing to communicate?

Most people have a desire to tell their story, which can be quite long. That is not what you should start with. Your first words should be the end result you want. Keep it short and sweet, 25 words or less. Examples are:

  • I want a divorce and want primary custody of the children.
  • I haven’t filed my taxes in 5 years, and I need this to be fixed.
  • I filed a claim for water damage and the insurance company will not pay for all my damages.
  • A contractor ripped me off. I want my money back.
  • After 20 years, my company let me go. I want my job back.

After you say what you want, let the lawyer ask the questions. He or she will ask you about the facts, thinking about WHAT legal remedies are available, and what needs to be done to maximize the chances of getting what you want.

Isn’t this obvious? Not really, most people do not do this. Being mindful, and thinking about what you want BEFORE talking with counsel is difficult, but is absolutely essential in getting the attorney-client relationship off on the right foot and ultimately getting what you need.

In the event you need to speak with an attorney, please consider contacting the Law Office of Elliott Klein, PLLC. There is no charge for the initial telephone contact.
